Stars like Katy Perry, Sofia Richie, and Halsey stepped out wearing lingerie that was styled to perfection-not a cut-off denim short, halter top, or DIY headband to be found. During the last few days in the desert, the crochet crop top took a backseat to the bra. This year, however, we found a surprising correlation between what was shown on the Spring 2017 runways and what showed up at the festival in Indio. The Coachella look-at least in this writer’s opinion-has become more costume party than free-spirited form of stylistic expression. It seems as if the goal is always to wear as little as possible (hey, in all fairness, it can get really hot). Each April in Indio, California, girls slip on that itsy-bitsy piece of fabric in order to bounce around from sponsored pool parties to the main stage, transforming themselves into provocatively dressed music groupies of the Instagram age. If there is one item of clothing as quintessential to Coachella style as the flower crown, it has to be the crop top.
